ROUTE

The walks are mostly via rocky footpaths and cobbled footpaths (kalderimia). Thereare no sections on asphalt road. There are two sections that can be an issue for people suffering from serious acrophobia.

Start: Katapola                              End: Langada

Day 1: Arrival in Amorgos
Day 2: Round walk to Chora (4.5 - 9 km / 3 - 5,5 mi)
Day 3: From Katapola to Arkesini (16.5 km / 10 mi)
Day 4: From Chora to Langada (17. 5 km / 11 mi)
Day 5: Free day or short round walk (4 km / 2,5 mi)
Day 6: Round walk from Langada (18.5 km / 11,5 mi)
Day 7: Departure from Amorgos

Day 1:    Arrival in Amorgos

You arrive in Amorgos by ferry from Piraeus, Naxos or Santorini. Usually ferries arrive late and sometimes even well after midnight depending on your departure port (Ferry ticket is not included)

Day 2:    Round walk to Chora (4.5 - 9 km / 3 - 5,5 mi)

Today´s walk is flexible: you can either take a taxi to Chora and walk down or you can walk up via a different route to Chora and take a taxi back to Katapola or you can make the full round walk. The route will take you via a nice, paved mule track, through a deep valley and up to the capital town of Amorgos: Chora. This wonderful town is made of a maze of narrow alleys, surprising town squares and inviting café’s and taverns. After lunch you head downhill towards the carved coastline and gleaming sea, via a zigzagging track.

You can also walk down (app only) via Amorgos trail ‘8’, through rural countryside and along terraced fields until you reach the coast at Xylokeratidi, close to the hotel.

Challenge: 4.5 - 9 km / 3 - 5,5 mi

For the return from Chora to Katapola, we have another nicer (and longer)option, GR00381 (trail 8). Only available in app version, not in printed road book

Challenge: 7 km / 4.5 mi , 110 m ascent / 430 m descent

Day 3:    From Katapola to Arkesini (16.5 km / 10 mi)

Today you walk from Katapola via an old route, trodden by farmers and pilgrims, to the "city-state" of Ancient Arkesini. You come along the terraced farmland fields of Kato Meria, which are still farmed as they were 4000 years ago. You come past rural hamlets, with just a handful of inhabitants, along tiny chapels and along the remains of an old Acropolis. The walk ends in the village Arkesini where you can have a Greek coffee in the local kafenion whilst you wait for your taxi on call to take you back to Katapola

Challenge: 16.5 km / 10 mi, 600 m ascent, 400 m descent

Day 4:    From Chora to Langada (17. 5 km / 11 mi)

Today you have a morning transfer to Chora, the islands’ capital from where your walk starts. Soon you reach to the Monastery Chozoviotissa, a startling vertical splash of white monastery embedded in a cliff. Along a centuries-old route you walk half the islands’ length, passing by a deserted village and numerous chapels as you enjoy amazing sea views on either side of the island. From Egiali Bay you make your final ascent, via a wide mule track, to the village of Langada and your hotel.

Challenge: 17. 5 km / 11 mi, 600 m ascent, 700 m descent

Day 5:    Free day or short round walk (4 km / 2,5 mi)

A day to relax on the lovely beach of Egiali or alternatively make a short, but demanding round walk to the 8 ruins on top of the Machos hill from where you have a marvellous view over the surrounding islands; you can see the islands of Naxos, Santorini, the small Cycladic Islands and many more.

Egiali has a sea sports center where you can join a snorkelling or diving activity

Challenge: 4 km / 2,5 mi, 350 m ascent, 350 m descent

Day 6:    Round walk from Langada (18.5 km / 11,5 mi)

Along the terraced fields you ascend along traditional paths to the Monastery of Agios Ioannis Theologos, a haven of peace in a wild landscape. From here you can optionally continue to a windy outpost, marked by the church Stavros, accessible only by a cliff path. Pacing back you walk once more through the agricultural terraced fields (called Kambos) and reach the village of Tholaria, with its tumbled cubes of Cycladic houses. The walk ends in Egiali from where you return on foot to Langada or you take a taxi.

Challenge: 18.5 km / 11,5 mi, 700 m ascent / descent

Day 7:    Departure from Amorgos

After breakfast your arrangement comes to an end. You travel back to Piraeus on the day ferry or you continue your trip by taking a ferry to Naxos or to Santorini.
