Start: Teverga Finish: Teverga
Arrival in the last village of the valley of Teverga, on the limit between Las Ubiñas-La Mesa Natural Park and Somiedo. Accommodation at a charming hotel near San martín. If you arrive early, you can visit the Romanesque Collegiate Church of San Pedro de Teverga (11th century). Particularly interesting are the completely renovated cloisters and the “Mummies of Teverga”.
Today you head to the Valley of Somiedo, where Spain’s largest brown bear population is located, protected against poachers and curious tourists.
This morning you will hike with a specialsed official nature guide who will show you the bears' way of life and curiosities of the Cantabrian ecosystem where they live. With a bit of luck you might see some bear tracks or fur. The guided tour is in English. The transfer to the beginning of the route is not included but the guide will arrange for the taxi which you will pay the driver for on the spot.
If you did not spot any brown bears yesterday, today you have the chance to see them in captivity along the “Bear Trail” ('Senda del Oso'), a car-free bike path that follows the route of an old miners' railway and takes you past a small reserve where two Asturian brown bears have been raised in captivity in a desperate attempt to increase the native (bear) population.
You can choose from an easy route downstream or a more interesting one on mountain bike. The transfer to the staring point of the route is included from Santo Adriano, where the bike rental shop is located. You can also visit the Teverga Prehistory Park, housed in natural caves with replicas of famous cave paintings. The tour includes a guide in Spanish and audio-guides are available in English.
After a delicious breakfast, the program comes to an end.
